Tips for a Rodent Free Home

swfl rodent extermination

If you’ve heard gnawing, squeaking, or scampering recently in your home. You probably have a house guest, a common mouse. Other rodents make their way inside, but distinctive characteristics of mice include gnaw marks on wood, plastic, or cardboard; fecal droppings 1/8 to ¼ inch long; musky odor; or body run marks along baseboards or insulation (Run marks are left behind by the dirty, oily body of a mouse repeatedly running back and forth along an established trail).

mouse in breadIt is important to rid your home of these uninvited guests and ensure that your home is not hospitable or easily accessible to them in the future. House mice are not pets. Mice transmit diseases, cause fires by chewing electrical wiring, and mice ruin food, papers, storage boxes, woodwork, and insulation with gnawing, urine, and droppings. Lenny’s Pest Control is an expert in the extermination of these unwanted house guests. We have years of experience and know just what to do to get the job done right the first time around! We’ve put together some important information on mice and rodents for you below.

Identify Your Problem

To begin eliminating your rodent problems, start with a good inspection. Inspecting your home, shed or barn is important for determining which type of rodents are present: rats or mice. A good inspection provides three main valuable pieces of information:

  • Type of Infestation
  • Extent of Infestation
  • Location for Control Effort

types-of-rodents

Droppings

Fecal pellets are the most commonly encountered sign in a rodent inspection and serve as primary evidence to confirm an infestation.  Even a small population of mice can produce literally thousands of droppings in a short period of time. Examining the droppings can serve as evidence of an infestation and may help you identify your type of infestation.

rodent droppingsType of Infestation

   House Mice

    • Quantity: 50 to 75 pellets daily
    • Size: ¼ inch long
    • Shape: Small with 1 or both ends pointed

 Norway Rat

    • Quantity: 40 to 50 pellets daily
    • Size: ¾ inch long
    • Shape: Larger, rectangular with blunt ends
    • Found in small groups

      Roof Rats

    • Quantity: 40 to 50 pellets daily
    • Size: ½ inch long
    • Shape: Larger, curved, sausage-shaped with pointed ends
    • Found scattered

Fresh droppings are dark in color and soft in texture, but after three days they harden and lose the dark color. Age of droppings will tell you if your rodent problem is current.

Size of Infestation

This one is pretty simple – the more droppings you have…the larger your infestation, which will help you determine your approach for rat control.

Rodent Prevention Tips –

As far as your home is concerned, mice and rats look for the basics: food, water and shelter. Below are a few tips to rodent-proof your home and keep these annoying critters from thinking your home is their home.

Mouse Infestations SWFLRemove food & water sources

  • Cover trash cans with snug, metal lids (mice can gnaw through plastic).
  • Store pet & bird food in tightly sealed glass or metal containers.
  • Elevate your compost container at least 1 foot off the ground.
  • Pick up around fruit trees so fallen fruit or nuts don’t remain on the ground.
  • Clean up your garage tightly contain lawn seed, tulip bulbs and bone meal.

Remove opportunities for shelter

  • Inspect your house for broken windows, damaged sills or siding and foundation cracks.
  • Seal or screen over gaps around pipes and stove, dryer and foundation vents.
  • Install flashing to keep pests from climbing up your siding and getting into the attic.
  • Eliminate hiding places by removing ivy, trimming shrubs and bushes off the ground and away from the home foundation and elevating firewood.

Free QuoteExtermination

A lot of devices and poisons have been introduced in order to exterminate rodents, but some of these may pose more problems in the future. To ensure complete victory over mice and rodents, you should hire an exterminator, such as Lenny’s Pest Control, to get rid of mice. We know everything about house rodents and the proper and effective ways to get rid of them for good!

Once you have rid your home of rodents, clean up around the house. A clean home is a less hospitable environment. Use plastic storage crates instead of boxes. Take newspapers to the recycling bin on a weekly basis. Keep woodpiles away from the house. Keep brush and debris swept, raked and cleaned. If your home looks like a mouse nest, it may very well be one.

What’s Bugging You This Holiday Season?

Is an army of ants marching toward the cookie jar on your counter top or some sweet prize in your pantry? Are ants threatening to spoil your Holiday Happiness and Merry Joy? If fire ants plague your yard, lanai or patio and you’re tired of getting stung by the tiny attackers maybe it’s time to take greater measures and fight back! Lenny’s Pest Control is all about keeping you informed, educated and prepared to exterminate, eliminate and de-bug your home as effectively and efficiently as possible. Today we bring you some very interesting and hopefully helpful details on those dreaded house ants!

With over 12,000 species of ants in the world, only a small handful of them insist on invading our homes in search of something tasty from either the sweet foods or flesh and greasy foods. Ants commonly found indoors include the Argentine ant, the pharaoh ant, the thief or grease ant, the pavement ant and the odorous house ant. And if you’re really unlucky, you might have the carpenter ant, an ant insistent on destroying the wood that holds up your house, so get professional help fast in that case!

Getting rid of ants is never a simple proposition, despite their simple nature. Luckily for you, you’re trying to get rid of sugar ants, and they are probably the most simple-minded ant species. What do they eat? They eat sugar, sweets, and other scraps of food. This is why we call them sugar ants. Of course, the term sugar ant is actually a misnomer. The real Sugar Ant is a native of the Australian continent, and exclusive to that part of the world; you won’t find them here. The ants you’re probably having trouble with are Pavement Ants and Pharaoh Ants.

Little black ants have also garnered the name “sugar ant,” though their real name is, well, Little Black Ants. Not a lot is known about Little Black Ants, except that they eat just about anything (including other insects) and they really like rotting wood and dark spaces. Getting rid of little black ants, however, despite how little is known about them from a biological perspective, is as easy as getting rid of sugar ants. Sweet baits can be used to control little black ants indoors, and protein baits can be used to control little black ants outdoors. We have some recommendations below to help you in your battle against the ants but please remember that we’re here to help de-bug your home and make your Holidays a lot more joyous. Our experienced and knowledgeable pest control technicians know exactly what to look for and have all the right techniques to protect and exterminate your home from all unwanted bugs – including ants!

Here are just a few tips to help you keep the sugar ants, little black ants and any other kind of ants away from your kitchen this Holiday season.

  • Heed the scouts. The first signs of ants in your kitchen is a warning to you. These are the scout ants checking out your kitchen for signs of suitability to invade and their job will be to return back to the nest to inform the other ants that your kitchen is blooming with potential. Waste no time in getting to work cleaning your kitchen, sealing all food and removing all sources of sticky, sweet, greasy and flesh foods from their access.
  • Don’t have any dirty dishes left out. Wash all dishes as they’re used or place them into the dishwasher and shut the door tight. Wipe down all of your cupboard and bench-top surfaces with vinegar; this cleans, disinfects and leaves a nasty smell as far as ants are concerned. Remove all sources of garbage and keep the kitchen bin shut tightly. Rinse all recyclable containers before putting them into storage.
  • Sweep and vacuum the kitchen area daily.
  • Rinse off any jar, container or bottle that has a sticky or leftover residue. In particular, check jam/jelly jars, sauce bottles, pickle bottles, cordial bottles and honey and syrup containers. Place your honey jar and any other very ant-attractive foods inside a bowl of water (see How to keep ants out of honey and How to remove ants from cat food for more details.
  • Seal every food item in containers. The containers need to be of the sort that ants cannot get into. Be relentless about this for 3-7 days. The ants, having nothing to eat, will go elsewhere. This works because the ants are following the chemical trails left by other ants, who did find food.
  • You may also need to seal fragrant items such as cleaning powders, deodorants, and the like in case these attract the ants’ initial attention. Just be alert to any congregations around non-food sources.

Fire antsFor Fire ants you want to use a professional exterminator, such as Lenny’s Pest Control, specializing in their extermination. Fire ants in Southwest Florida rarely enter the home but if they do, get immediate help as they’re aggressive and their stings are painful and can trigger off an allergic reaction in susceptible people. This isn’t something you typically want to handle on your own.

Dealing with Carpenter ants is no laughing matter either. An invasion of carpenter ants in SWFL is serious as they can damage your house structure. Be alert for their invasion – piles of broken wings can be one sign and it is longer than most ants. You may also see their fecal pellets (these appear like sawdust) and they can sometimes be heard rustling in the walls. A professional pest control specialist will know exactly what and where to spray in order to get rid of every last one of these not so nice bugs!

Whether you currently have kitchen or patio ants or you want to protect your home against them, follow the tips included above and you’ll improve your chances of being ant free this winter. Lenny’s Pest Control is your trusted Ant and Bug Extermination expert in the Southwest Florida area – call us and we’ll take care of your kitchen ant right away!

Bed Bugs Biting?

Bed Bugs Keeping You Up at Night?

If you’ve been waking up in the morning with little red marks on your body, then you might be the victim of a little nighttime smorgasbord. Bed bugs just love dining on human flesh, and although you don’t usually feel their bite while you’re asleep, the marks they leave behind can be sore, itchy and embarrassing. Knowing that you’re on the menu is also enough to leave you afraid to go to sleep, and this can create another set of serious problems. Here are some tips and information on bed bugs, how to tell if your home is infested and what to do about it if it is.

Signs of Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are very tiny insects that only come out at night. Adults are most noticeable because they can grow to about the size and shape of a small apple seed. These insects like to congregate in the nooks and crannies of mattresses. But, contrary to their popular name, bed bugs don’t restrict themselves to just your bedding. They can also inhabit sofas, loveseats, plush chairs, window frames, carpeting and other fabric-lined items and furniture. Tell-tale signs of infestation can include:

  • Clusters of red welts on the body, mostly found on the torso. Individual welts are small and will usually have a dark red center.
  • Tiny blood spots on your bedding. This is caused by the accidental squashing of well-fed bed bugs as you move throughout the night.
  • Discarded brown exoskeleton shells. Bed bugs molt every two months and they have an average lifespan of 10 months.
  • Brown stains in the nooks and crannies of your mattress or anywhere else the bugs may be inhabiting. The staining is a result of the bugs defecating.

How to Get Rid of Bed Bugs

Getting rid of bed bugs without the assistance of a professional exterminator can be difficult as these bugs are resilient and fast multiplying, but it is possible with severe determination. Here are a few strategies you can use to help avoid or control a bed bug infestation.

If Bed Bugs are Already in the Home:

  • Wash all of your bedding materials in hot water (120 degrees or higher) and dry them on the highest setting possible.
  • Use a steam cleaner to thoroughly clean any non-washable furniture and carpeting. Concentrate your steam cleaning efforts in the nooks and crevices.
  • Vacuum often and dispose of the collected debris immediately.
  • Wrap your mattress and box spring in specially made zipper bags and keep them wrapped for at least a full year so the contained bugs will die off.
  • Chemical treatments, which are the most effective, are available, but they should only be used by a professional. In addition, using chemical treatments on mattresses or bedding could pose a health hazard to young children or people who suffer from breathing problems, so precautions need to be followed.

If Your Home is Currently Bed Bug Free:

  • Check hotel furniture and your luggage vigilantly when traveling, especially before you leave, to ensure you don’t bring home any uninvited guests.
  • If you’ve heard rumors about a certain place having bed bugs, avoid it at all costs as the bugs can enter your home on your clothing.
  • If you’ve received or purchased used furniture, steam clean it thoroughly before bringing it into your home.
  • Clean your home frequently and reduce the amount of clutter that the bugs could otherwise use to hide.

Whether you currently have bed bugs or you want to protect your home against them, follow the tips included above and you’ll improve your chances of sleeping bite-free. Drought, heat bring spiders out

Heat driving brown recluses to seek refuge inside homes
By Danielle Dellorto CNN

Record high temperatures and rapid expanding drought across the country is resulting in an increase in spiders.

“All insects are cold-blooded, so in extreme heat they develop quicker, which results in more generations popping up now compared to previous summers,” said Jim Fredericks, an entomologist and wildlife ecology expert with the National Pest Management Association.

One spider to watch out for is arguably one of Mother Nature’s most dangerous, the brown recluse. The extreme heat is driving brown recluses to seek refuge inside homes.

Easily disguised as a common house spider, the venom from a brown recluse can cause irritation to the skin, lesions, and in rare cases, death.

“All spiders have a venomous bite, but only a few can be medically dangerous to humans, and the brown recluse is a top concern,” said Fredericks.

The brown recluse spider is smaller than you might imagine — about the size of a quarter. It’s tan in color and has a dark spot in the shape of a violin on its body.

You aren’t likely to see them roaming around during the day — like their name suggests, they are reclusive. They typically hide in dark corners of your home, or in stored items like boxes and in closets.

“A common misconception is that spiders like to bite people,” said Fredericks. “But they actually don’t recognize people as a food source, and will typically only bite as a defense mechanism.”

A bite from a brown recluse will be painless at first. Within three to eight hours, the bite site will become swollen, red, and tender to the touch. In 95% of cases, the irritation ends there and the bite will heal on its own without developing into a more serious irritation.

In some cases, however, the venom begins to break down the cells in the skin and progress into a necrotic lesion needing immediate medical attention. This process takes about two to three weeks.

“It is rare for a brown recluse to result in death, but it can occur in children or adults who are allergic to the spider’s venom,” said Fredericks. “It best to get medical attention right away if bitten, to make sure you aren’t allergic.”

Brown recluse spiders are generally concentrated in the midwestern and south-central regions of the United States.

Reduce your risk of being bitten by wearing long gloves if sorting through dark spaces in your home or moving boxes and furniture. Experts also recommend setting out glue boards (which can be purchased at your local home improvement store) to catch the spiders before they have an opportunity to bite.

The Spiders are Back!

Summer in Southwest Florida is hot and wet this time of year with lots of wonderful rain. On the upside the rain brings us a few cool moments and we enjoy a much-needed break from the hot sun. On the downside all the spiders are trying to find a dry space to call home and a good supply of fresh bugs to eat! If you research Spiders you will quickly find that most informational sites state that spiders  are generally good to have around because they help to minimize the population of harmful insects. Well that may be true but I haven’t met one woman that’s happy to have a spider or two around her house to keep the bugs away!

A creepy crawly spider can be a real scary thing for some people and I’ve known a woman or two to run for her life, screaming bloody murder just because one walked by. You’d think a brain eating Zombie was after her only to find it’s just a little tiny thing with lots of legs. Truth is spiders like to eat bugs and bugs love leftovers lying around on your kitchen counter. Spiders also love to hide in nice dark corners where clutter and messy spaces make for a cozy home. So once again, I’m not trying to tell you how to run your home or anything but cleaning up the mess, taking out the trash and putting away leftovers is a good idea to keep the bugs and the spiders away. Aside from that, even though some spiders don’t have Zombie like powers, they can bite humans, and they are poisonous, so it is a good idea to have Lenny’s Pest Control  treat your home for spiders.

Several spiders pose a serious threat to humans. The two spiders that are the deadliest to humans in the United States are the Black Widow and the Brown Recluse. Since a few people die each year from the bite of either of these two spiders, it’s extremely important for any person that is bitten by one of these spiders to seek treatment immediately. In some cases, hospitalization may be necessary.

The Black Widow spider can be easily recognized because she is black with a red hourglass on the underside of her abdomen. The male is considerably smaller than the female, and he has a body up to half an inch long. The Black Widow typically remains outdoors.

The Brown Recluse spider has a darker brown hourglass on its back. The Brown Recluse loves to be indoors and generally stays out of sight. It may never be seen until you reach into a dark spot where it is hiding. Then it will bite.

There are plenty of other spiders in the United States, such as the Grass Spider, Wolf Spider, Hobo Spider, and the Saint Andrew’s Cross Spider, just to name a few. These spiders do not have the same strong venom in their bite, but it is very painful and treatment may be required.

If you have noticed spiders in your home, call us at (239) 945-6543. Our team of Pest Control experts is happy to present your with the best and safest way to eliminate your spider problem, and make recommendations about how to keep them away in the future. In the mean time here’s more on spiders below!

About Spiders

Spiders are arachnids, they are not insects. Insects have six legs, antennae and some have wings. Spiders have eight legs and do not have antennae or wings. Arachnids and insects do have something in common: they both have a hard outer skeleton and legs with jointed sections.

The word arachnid comes from arachne, which is the Greek word for spider. According to Greek mythology, a young weaver named Arachne believed that her weaving skills were better than that of the goddess Athena. Athena challenged Arachne to a contest and Arachne proved that her weaving was just as good as Athena’s. However, Arachne insulted Athena in the way in which she portrayed the gods in her weaving. As punishment, Athena changed Arachne into a spider.

Potential Threat?
Most spiders are not poisonous to human beings. There are about 3,000 different spiders in North America, but only a few of them cause problems for people.

If you are bitten, try to capture the spider that bit you if you can catch it quickly and safely. Later, if needed, you can get an accurate identification of the spider.

Preventing Spider Problems
There are many ways to make your home less appealing to spiders.

  • If there are cracks in your foundation or around windows and doors, seal them up.
  • Check places where water pipes and electrical lines enter your house, and caulk any openings.
  • Keep woodpiles and debris away from your house.
  • In storage areas, put boxes up off the floor and away from walls. Seal boxes with tape to keep spiders from living inside them.
  • In general, cleaning up clutter will mean you have fewer spiders.
  • Pruning vegetation away from your house and keeping the area next to the foundation clear will also make your house less attractive to spiders.
  • Outdoor lighting sometimes attracts insects, which in turn attracts spiders. You can move outdoor lighting away from windows and doors if this is a problem around your home.

Removing Spiders

  • You can remove a spider from inside your house by putting a jar over it. Then slip a piece of paper under the jar so that the opening is sealed, pick up the jar, and take the spider outside.
  • A good vacuum cleaner easily removes spiders and their webs from your house. Since spiders have soft bodies, they usually don’t survive vacuuming. A broom is also a useful tool for moving a spider outside.
  • Crushing spiders with a fly swatter, rolled up newspaper, or your shoe are other simple ways to deal with unwanted spiders.

Spider Facts

  • Not all spiders spin webs.
  • Female spiders are usually larger than male spiders.
  • Crab spiders can change their color to match their surroundings.
  • The Daddy Long-Legs is not a spider.

Bugs in the Rainy Season

Rainy Season Brings Ants, Mosquitoes and Other Bugs!

Summer has arrived and there is no doubt we are definitely in the middle of rainy season here in Southwest Florida. Along with the rain come ants and other unwanted pests that are trying to find dry space to make a home in. Their job is to find whatever crawl space they can fit into and make their way into your home to escape the wet rain. Most people don’t realize that leaving out food, open trash can, crumbs, leftovers are open invitation meals to these bugs whose home just got flooded outside.

Many Fort Myers, FL homeowners try to treat ants on their own and instead of eliminating these pests, their treatments make them worse. Certain types of ants are treated with protein baits, while others are best treated with sugar baits. But the average person has no way of knowing who needs what so it becomes a guessing game that doesn’t always end well for the homeowner.

Pests in your home can be very annoying, quite embarrassing and can in some situations create an unsafe environment for young children and pets. Just knowing they are there may be enough to keep you awake at night. You can rest assured with peace of mind  knowing that Lenny’s Pest Control in Cape Coral will happily take care of your home and get you bug free in no time. We recommend you take a few steps to prevent bugs from easily entering your home and making it theirs!

Pest Prevention Tips from the National Pest Management Association:

  • Seal cracks and holes on the outside of the home including entry points for utilities and pipes.
  • Keep tree branches and shrubbery well-trimmed and away from the house.
  • Keep basements, attics, and crawl spaces well ventilated and dry.
  • Store garbage in sealed containers and dispose of it regularly.
  • Repair fascia and rotted roof shingles; some insects are drawn to deteriorating wood.
  • Replace weather-stripping and repair loose mortar around basement foundation and windows.
  • Store fire wood at least 20 feet away from the house and five inches off the ground.
  • Call a qualified pest professional for additional advice and treatment if necessary.

If you see one bug, that means hundreds may be lurking just around the corner! This creates a number of health hazards, not to mention the potential for damage to your home or business structure and personal belongings. Whether you have a small home or large commercial complex, Lenny’s Pest Control is very well equipped to handle your rodent and pest control problems quickly. Some present health hazards by spreading bacteria or allergens into your home, office building or just from bites or stings. Others can destroy your property or are nothing more than a nuisance. This is when a trusted, reliable pest control service becomes necessary.
